Will Power 12 Need New FlashSystem Storage?
IBM has not announced a Power 12 storage architecture. Here is why that question matters less than it sounds, and what to actually do with a FlashSystem purchase today.
This question gets asked backwards a lot: buyers assume a future Power generation will either lock them into today's FlashCore Module lineup or obsolete it. Neither is really how the two product lines relate to each other, and understanding why is more useful than waiting for an announcement that has not happened.

The decoupling that actually matters
Power Systems and FlashSystem release on separate, independent cadences. A Power server does not attach to FlashSystem storage through a proprietary internal bus the way it does to an NED24 drawer or internal NVMe U.2 bay; it attaches over standard Fibre Channel or NVMe-oF SAN protocols through a supported host adapter. That is the same attachment path whether the server is a Power10, a Power11, or eventually whatever follows it. A SAN-attached FlashSystem array does not get stranded by a new Power generation the way an internal expansion component could.
This is why the roadmap outlook page's own confidence table puts a Power 12 release window at roughly 2027-2028, pattern-based, not IBM-confirmed. FlashCore Module 5 will very likely still be IBM's current storage media when that window arrives, since FCM generations have historically shipped every two to three years and FCM5 only launched in March 2026.
What this means for a buying decision today
Don't hold a FlashSystem purchase for a Power generation that has no confirmed specification, timeline, or storage architecture. A FlashSystem 5600, 7600, or 9600 array bought against current Power10 or Power11 hardware attaches over the same SAN protocols a future Power generation will use, so the storage investment carries forward independent of the server refresh cycle. The genuine open question isn't compatibility, it's whether IBM ships a sixth FlashCore Module generation before or after the next Power generation actually arrives, and neither company has said.
