IBM's Three-Year Power Cadence: What It Tells Us About Power 12 Timing

IBM has never published a fixed release calendar for Power hardware. What exists instead is a pattern, and patterns are exactly the kind of evidence worth taking seriously when a company has no obligation to confirm anything ahead of time.

The pattern itself

IT Jungle analyst Timothy Prickett Morgan has tracked IBM settling into a roughly three-year cadence for both Power processor generations and major IBM i operating system releases, each carrying seven years of standard support followed by three years of extended support. Power10 launched in 2021. Power11 launched in 2025 -- a four-year gap, slightly longer than the strict three-year pattern, but Morgan's broader multi-decade tracking still points to a three-year rhythm as the underlying norm IBM is managing toward.

There's a second, independent data point worth weighing alongside the hardware cadence: IBM i 7.6 shipped in April 2025, and the next major release, referred to as IBM i 8.1 or "IBM i Next," is independently projected for 2028. IBM has historically timed major IBM i releases to coincide with new Power hardware generations, since a new IBM i major version is typically what actually exposes new hardware capabilities to customers. Two independently tracked release histories landing in the same window is a stronger signal than either one alone.

Early technical evidence

Compiler support is often the earliest public fingerprint of a new processor generation, long before any marketing materials exist. Reporting from mid-2025 noted GCC compiler patches already targeting a post-Power11 "future" processor target -- exactly the kind of low-level infrastructure work that has to start years before a chip ships.

The honest caveat

Morgan himself frames the predictability of IBM's roadmap with an important qualifier: "the only variable is really you, and what you do with your Power Systems and IBM i budgets." IBM's release cadence has held remarkably steady, but it is not a contractual promise, and a 2027-2028 Power12 window remains a projection built from pattern-matching, not a confirmed date.
